Yet with ice and sleet outside, my mind wanders to sunnier seclusions. As is apt to happen, I found myself in the midst of March, 2007, ambling down 6th street, right into one of my biggest music idols: Wayne Coyne of the Flaming Lips.</p> <p>Austin during Spring Break is one of the most exhilerating experiences there is to have. I first experienced SxSW through the eyes of the industry. In 2006, I got a call while remarkably inebriated on the Texas coast. I’d been promoting concerts for Island Records and one of the head reps had an emergency; they needed me to work South-by.</p> <p>Nine hours later, I was crammed against a tiny stage in Carribean Lights, moving frantically to the Pillows, a band I never thought I’d set eyes on, much less hear preform. Other notable events include the MTV party at the old airport featuring DJ Shadow, Queens of the Stoneage and the battered cast of The Real World: Austin.</p> <p>The next year saw me at SxSW, but without corporate backing or any source of income. One week and $30 later, I had spent 42 hours downtown, seen 38 bands, drank 43 beers and collected several tons of swag. That year I discovered the beauty of the free sideshows. I experienced the chaos of The Monotonix, Green Milk from Orange Planet, White Denim, The Golden Dogs, Les Savy Fav, and so many others.</p> <p>I was hooked. I am hooked.</p> <p>This year, I’ll be collaborating with friends to bring you SxSWer.com, a blog covering all aspects of the festival by people specializing in that area.</p> <p>We’ll be in search of band line-ups, VIP and RSVP lists, secret show information, schedule changes, venue information… everything we can find that we’d want to know.</p> <p>So check back.
